Cornelius Build Guide

This Cornelius Build Guide exists for one reason, and it is not the reason most players think. Right now, while you read this, some Guardians are pulling hundreds of millions of damage out of Cornelius on Osh, while others watch the same hero barely leave a scratch — same stars, same investment on paper. The difference almost never comes down to how much you poured in. Instead, it comes down to one secret the game will never teach you: knowing exactly what you are not supposed to upgrade.

If you have done what every other hero trained you to do — maxing everything and chasing that power number — then brace yourself, because there is a real chance you have already turned your Cornelius into the weak version without realizing it. Your account looks stronger for it, and that is the trap. So before you spend one more resource on him, read this all the way through.

Last time we answered the big question of whether you should build him at all, and we landed on a very specific answer: not for Arena, and not because a tier list crowned him this month. You build Cornelius for Asgard — for Osh — that single, perfectly prepared moment where the whole team sets the stage and Cornelius delivers the hit. Today we get into how you actually build him.

Cornelius Is a Punching Wizard, Not a Mage

Before any artifact or glyph, a good Cornelius Build Guide starts with understanding what kind of hero he actually is. On paper, everything about him screams magic damage dealer: Intelligence is his main stat, he sits in the back line, and he targets the highest-Intelligence enemy. Yet in the way that counts, he is not a mage at all.

His signature attack, Heavy Wisdom, slams the target with a monolith — and that damage lands as physical, bypassing magic defense entirely while scaling off the target’s own Intelligence. Even his basic attack is physical, scaling from his magic attack. So think of him as a punching wizard rather than a caster, because that distinction hands you the entire build in three words: magic attack, armor penetration, and critical hit.

Magic attack fuels the number. Armor penetration punches through Osh’s defense. Critical hit, meanwhile, turns a big swing into the screenshot everyone talks about — because those enormous Osh results are not the ability quietly doing its job, they are the moment it lands as a crit with the whole team’s buffs stacked underneath. That is the target you build toward: not survivability, not a bigger power number, but the hit.

Ingredient of the Hit What It Does
Magic attack Sets the raw size of the number Cornelius swings for.
Heavy Wisdom level The one ultimate that carries the entire payload.
Armor penetration Strips the armor that stands between him and Osh.
Critical hit Multiplies everything above into the game-defining strike.

The Only Target That Matters — Level-160 Osh

Here is what makes Osh so special. Heavy Wisdom does not scale off how strong Cornelius is; it scales off the target. The smarter the victim, the harder he swings — and Osh carries one of the highest Intelligence stats you will ever point a hero at. As a result, Cornelius reads that enormous number and converts it straight into damage, almost as if he were built for the boss.

Be specific about which Osh, though. This build is aimed at the top-tier fight: Osh at level 160, where his Intelligence peaks and Heavy Wisdom therefore hits its hardest. You are not preparing for a casual matchup — everything from here is aimed squarely at that one battle.

Remember, too, that the monolith lands as physical damage, and that matters more than it sounds. Osh sits behind a massive magic-defense wall that eats normal mages alive, yet a physical hit walks straight past it as if the wall were not there. The only thing left standing is armor, which is exactly what your penetration is for — strip it down, and the hit lands almost clean.

Then comes the crit, and this is where the luck lives. Osh resists critical hits harder than almost anything you will ever fight, so that decisive strike is never automatic. Instead, you stack crit, your team stacks crit, and you wait for the moment it finally breaks through. When it does, that is the explosion you screenshot; when it does not, that is the run you quietly delete.

Skills — Max Only Heavy Wisdom

Cornelius has four skills, and your instincts will scream to level all of them. Fight that urge, because for an Osh build you upgrade one skill only — Heavy Wisdom, the ultimate, the payload — and you leave the other three exactly where they are.

Skill Role Osh Verdict
Heavy Wisdom The monolith — his entire burst. Max it
Rune of Suppression Cuts an enemy’s magic attack (anti-mage). Leave flat
Protective Dome Team shield boosting magic defense. Leave flat
Memory Loss Pre-battle curse on an enemy’s first skill. Leave flat

Those three are pure utility. They earn their keep in PvP, yet they do nothing for the burst, and leveling them simply inflates his power number while contributing zero to the moment that matters. Only the ultimate feeds the hit, so only the ultimate gets your resources. If that already feels wrong, good — hold onto that feeling, because the rest of this build keeps asking you to fight the same instinct.

Skins — Chase Magic Attack, Avoid Health

First, a detail many players miss: Cornelius’s skin bonuses all stack. Every skin you own feeds him stats at once, regardless of which one is displayed, so skin priority is not about looks — it is about which stats you fund first.

Because magic attack scales his damage, his magic-attack skins lead, which means Angelic and Masquerade. His armor-penetration skin, Demonic, comes next, since a physical hero punching into Osh’s armor treats penetration as raw damage rather than a throwaway. Meanwhile his health skins, Stellar and Cybernetic, are ones you avoid outright — not save for later, but avoid — because health only pads his bar. In Arena, staying alive matters; against Osh, he just needs to survive long enough to swing, and every stone spent on a health skin is a stone that is not making the hit bigger.

Cornelius Build Guide priorities for hitting level-160 Osh in Hero Wars

Glyphs — And the Magic Defense Warning

The glyph logic mirrors the skins. Magic attack leads because magic attack is damage, followed by the stats that support the swing, such as intelligence and a little armor to keep him upright. Two glyphs, however, you leave completely alone.

Start with health. General tier lists park the health glyph near the top for a durable, all-purpose Arena Cornelius, and for that build it is fine — but this is not that build. Health does nothing for the hit, so on your Osh Cornelius you keep it flat. The magic-defense glyph is a different beast entirely: it is not merely wasted, it is a genuine warning. Leveling it actively works against the run, so leave it exactly where it is and do not talk yourself into “just a few levels for safety.” A few levels is precisely how you break the fight.

That warning also extends beyond Cornelius himself. On your Osh team, keep magic defense untouched across every teammate going in with him, because extra magic defense throws off the whole squad’s run rather than just his. So whoever you bring to set up the hit, hold their magic defense flat too — and remember that point, because it is about to return one more time.

Artifacts — The Trap That Ruins Your Cornelius

Here is the exact spot where players quietly wreck this hero. Cornelius has three artifacts: his book, the Tome of Arcane Knowledge, giving magic attack and health; his ring, giving intelligence; and his weapon, the Archivist’s Staff, giving magic defense.

A normal player sees three artifacts and levels all three evenly, because that is what you do with every other hero. The power number climbs, the account looks stronger, and the Osh Cornelius quietly gets worse. The culprit is that first artifact — the Archivist’s Staff — which is the magic-defense trap all over again. You already know what magic defense does to this fight, so bolting the exact stat you have spent this whole guide learning to avoid onto Cornelius himself is the last thing you want.

This is why the optimal artifact path genuinely splits in two: one route for Arena and general PvP, and a completely different route for Osh. They are not the same build, and you cannot max everything and call it optimized. For your Osh Cornelius, the Tome of Arcane Knowledge comes first — always — since that is your growing magic-attack number, and the ring supports it. As for the magic-defense weapon, you let it sit and resist every instinct the game has trained into you, because it inflates your power rating while contributing nothing to the moment that matters.

Artifact Gives Osh Priority
Tome of Arcane Knowledge (book) Magic attack + health First, always
Ring Intelligence Support
Archivist’s Staff (weapon) Magic defense Never touch

Ascension and the Tree of Wisdom

These last two pieces are refreshingly simple. Push his ascension all the way, and take his branch, the Tree of Wisdom, to max as well. There is no split and no hesitation here — ascension maxed, branch maxed, and you have the full picture.

Your Cornelius Build Guide at a Glance

To bring the whole Cornelius Build Guide together: build around the hit, which means magic attack, armor penetration, and critical hit. Beyond that single principle, every decision falls into “pour resources here” or “leave it flat” — so here is the cheat sheet.

Pour Resources Here Leave It Flat
Heavy Wisdom (ultimate only) Rune of Suppression, Protective Dome, Memory Loss
Magic-attack skins (Angelic, Masquerade) + Demonic (armor pen) Health skins (Stellar, Cybernetic)
Magic-attack glyph, intelligence, a little armor Health glyph + magic-defense glyph (whole team)
Tome of Arcane Knowledge (book), then ring Archivist’s Staff (magic-defense weapon)
Ascension + Tree of Wisdom (max both) Any stat chased purely for the power number

Above all, do not build for the power number. A higher rating is not a stronger Osh Cornelius — this is the one hero on your account where “I maxed everything” is a confession, not a flex. Point him at level-160 Osh, the fight this entire build was made for, and you will not just own the hero; you will own the hit your whole guild’s strategy depends on.

So tell me: how much Osh damage is your Cornelius pulling right now, and did you build him the smart way — or did you max everything first and learn this the hard way? Be honest, because I have seen plenty of both.
