What do hard and soft counters mean?
Understanding counter strength before you build your team
A hard counter means that simply having this hero on your team makes the enemy hero significantly less effective or almost completely shuts them down. The counter works under normal conditions without requiring specific teammates or perfect timing.
Isaac on the field hard counters magic damage heroes. The more magic damage they deal, the more Isaac benefits — making their core role actively work against their team.
A soft counter means the hero targets a specific skill or mechanic of the enemy rather than shutting them down completely. The enemy hero can still fulfill their core role, but one part of their kit becomes less effective or unreliable. For example, a hero whose main role is dealing damage may also have a self-healing skill — a soft counter can neutralize that healing without stopping their damage at all.
Celeste soft counters Chabba. Chabba’s core role is tanking and disrupting, and Celeste does not stop that. But Chabba also heals himself through his Bottomless Belly skill, and Celeste’s Cursed Flame blocks that healing and converts it into damage — neutralizing one specific mechanic without making Chabba useless.
Keep in mind: A soft counter in the right team composition can sometimes outperform a hard counter in the wrong one. Always read the explanation for each counter to understand the conditions under which it works best.
Understanding the Hero Wars counter list is one of the most important steps toward building stronger teams and winning more battles. Whether you are preparing for Arena, Grand Arena, or Guild Wars, knowing which heroes shut down your opponents gives you a strategic edge that raw power alone cannot provide.
What Is a Hero Wars Counter List?
A Hero Wars counter list is a structured guide that shows which heroes can effectively neutralize or reduce the impact of other heroes in battle. Counters can be divided into two categories: hard counters and soft counters.
A hard counter means the hero is highly effective against the target under normal conditions and can significantly reduce or eliminate their impact. A soft counter means the hero weakens or limits the target but does not completely shut them down, often depending on team composition or specific conditions being met.
How to Use This Hero Wars Counter List
Using this Hero Wars counter list is straightforward. Click on any hero portrait in the grid below to see which heroes counter them. Each counter entry includes the strength of the counter, a detailed explanation of why the matchup works, and links to related videos or articles where available.
Keep in mind that counters do not always work in isolation. Some counters require specific teammates to be fully effective. For example, Helios only punishes critical hits, meaning he becomes far more dangerous when paired with Sebastian or Jet. Others, like Isaac, thrive against magic-heavy teams. Always read the explanation before drawing conclusions.
Hard vs Soft Counters
Not every counter works the same way, and the Hero Wars counter list reflects that. Hard counters are displayed first for each hero so you can immediately identify the most reliable options. Soft counters follow, giving you additional choices when the ideal counter is unavailable or locked behind progression.
Understanding the difference helps you make smarter decisions. A soft counter in the right team can sometimes outperform a hard counter in the wrong one.
Team Synergy and Counters
Counters become even more powerful when combined with strong team synergy. The Hero Wars counter list should not be used in isolation — pair it with knowledge of team compositions, artifact builds, and game mode requirements to get the most value. A hero like Iris, for example, hard counters most tanks because her Expose Soul deals pure damage that bypasses armor and magic defense entirely, but her impact depends on the rest of your lineup supporting her.
⚠️ Work in Progress
This Hero Wars counter list is actively being built and expanded. New heroes and counter matchups are being added regularly over the coming days. Some heroes may not yet have counter data available — these are shown with a grayscale portrait and a coming soon indicator. Check back frequently as the list grows.
Tips for Applying Counters in Different Game Modes
Different modes reward different counter strategies. In Arena and Grand Arena, you face fixed enemy teams, so you can pick your counters deliberately before the battle starts. In Guild Wars and Clash of Worlds, flexibility matters more because you face multiple opponents. Use the Hero Wars counter list to identify versatile counters that work across multiple matchups rather than heroes that only shine in one specific situation. Great tool. Regarding Mojo … I am convinced he can be a valuable hero in fighting the Great Storm boss – he can simultaneously attacks in both front and back, which appears to be somewhat unique. Happy to be proven wrong
