More strength means more health, so the logic seems straightforward. However, once you actually run the numbers across multiple heroes, the picture changes in a way that genuinely surprises most players. By the end of this breakdown you’ll know exactly when this pattern earns its slot and when it’s a straight-up waste.

How the Strength Pattern Actually Works

Understanding how this pattern converts is the whole key to everything that follows. Each point of strength gives a hero 40 points of health, and if strength happens to be that hero’s main stat specifically, it also grants one extra point of physical attack per strength point on top of that.

Functionally, then, this is really just a health pattern wearing a different name, with a small secondary bonus to physical attack for strength-based heroes. That group is mostly tanks, along with a handful of strength-scaling damage dealers like Jhu, Tristan, Fafnir, and Lyra. Everyone else gets pure converted health and nothing more.

Strength Pattern vs Health Pattern: Running the Numbers

Now watch what happens when we actually crunch the math, because this is where things get interesting. The health pattern that already exists in this game increases a hero’s health directly by 13% at maximum development, with no conversion math required. So the real question is which one puts more health on your hero for the same flag slot.

Chabba, a Strength Main Tank

Chabba’s strength sits at 17,624. Run that through a maxed strength pattern at 14% and you’re adding roughly 2,467 more strength, which converts into about 98,680 extra health, plus 2,467 extra physical attack because strength is his main stat. On its own that sounds impressive.

Compare it directly to the health pattern, though. Chabba’s health pool is 1,308,922, and 13% of that comes out to over 170,000 extra health, more than 71,000 higher than what the strength pattern gives him. On top of that, you also have to ask whether the extra 2,467 physical attack is worth anything at all. For a tank whose entire job is soaking damage and holding the front line rather than dealing it, that attack bonus barely moves the needle.

Lara Croft, When Strength Isn’t the Main Stat

This is where the pattern really starts to fall apart. Lara Croft’s main stat is agility, not strength, and her strength stat sits at just 2,877. Running the same 14% strength pattern on her adds only about 403 strength, which converts into roughly 16,120 health. Because strength isn’t her main stat, meanwhile, she gets zero bonus physical attack out of it whatsoever.

The health pattern, by contrast, adds over 83,000 health directly to her existing 639,192 pool. That’s more than five times what the strength pattern gives her for the exact same slot. In other words, on any hero whose main stat isn’t strength, you’re getting a fraction of the value you’d pull from health pattern instead, with no scenario where it flips back in strength pattern’s favor.

The One Thing Strength Pattern Does That Health Can’t

At this point you’d think the verdict is obvious. Before writing the pattern off entirely, though, there’s one thing strength actually does that health pattern simply cannot touch. Both critical hit chance and dodge chance in this game are calculated using formulas where the target’s own main stat sits inside the equation.

Harder to Crit

The critical hit formula is the attacker’s crit stat divided by the attacker’s crit stat plus the defender’s main stat. Practically, that means a hero’s own main stat makes them harder to critically hit, and the higher it climbs, the more it drags down the enemy’s chance to land a crit. Testing Chabba’s strength of 17,624 against Lara Croft’s crit stat, at base stats with no artifacts or skills she crits him 47% of the time. Boost Chabba’s strength by 14% and that drops to around 43.5%.

Harder to Dodge

Dodge works the same way but from the opposite direction. When Chabba is the attacker, his own strength sits in the denominator of the enemy’s dodge formula, so a higher strength stat makes his attacks harder to dodge. Against Dante at base stats, Dante dodges Chabba 44% of the time, and the same 14% boost brings that down to roughly 41.1%. At Dante’s full potential with artifacts and skills active, his dodge sits at 72%, and the strength boost pulls it to around 68.9%. Either way, that’s a consistent 3-percentage-point reduction.

Let’s be honest about the scale here, though. We’re talking about roughly 3 to 4 percentage points depending on the exact match-up, which is not nothing, yet it’s also not a big difference in the middle of an actual fight. A swing that small in crit or dodge chance isn’t going to change the outcome of most battles on its own. Set those few points side by side with the 71,000-plus extra health that health pattern delivers on the same hero, and the answer becomes pretty clear: it’s a real, measurable effect, but nowhere near enough to close that gap alone.

The Three-Slot Problem on Every War Flag

There’s a structural problem on top of all this math that makes the decision even easier. Every war flag in this game can only hold three patterns total, and that’s a hard limit with no way around it. If you’re already running health pattern in one of those three slots, which you almost certainly should be given everything above, then adding strength pattern in a second slot burns two-thirds of your available flag on a fairly small, marginal benefit.

Instead, that slot could go toward something that fills a completely different role, such as armor penetration or magic penetration depending on what your team composition actually needs to punch through enemy defenses. Diversifying what your flag brings to the fight almost always beats doubling down on survivability you already have.

The One Exception: Foundry Tank Defense Flags

Before you write the pattern off completely, there’s one specific situation where running both health pattern and strength pattern together on the same flag genuinely makes sense. Foundry, specifically the defense plan used for Clash of Worlds, gives your defense teams a massive health boost as a base bonus, and including tank heroes in that defense lineup adds even more on top, calculated per individual team.

In heavily tank-based defense compositions built specifically for this, that stacking has been seen climbing all the way to around 250% bonus health on certain teams. Once you’re working with a multiplier that large sitting on top of a hero’s health pool, stacking both health-scaling patterns together on a dedicated foundry flag can compound into something genuinely worthwhile, because you’re no longer adding flat health, you’re feeding a much bigger multiplier than anywhere else in the game. As a bonus, you’d still keep that crit and dodge resistance while your tank holds the boosted defense slot.

Here’s the catch, though, and it’s an important one. That scenario only matters for a small handful of players in any given guild, since foundry defense slots are inherently limited. You’re not building this flag for your whole roster, only for the dedicated tanks assigned to hold those slots. Out of a guild with 30 members, you’re realistically looking at maybe five players who’d ever need a flag built this specific way. Everyone else, and every other piece of content outside foundry, is better off skipping the pattern and pairing health with a penetration or damage pattern that fits their comp.

Strength Pattern Analysis: The Bottom Line

Unless you’re specifically one of those few players building a dedicated foundry tank defense flag, don’t waste a pattern slot on strength pattern. Health pattern already does its job better on raw survivability, and while strength pattern does offer that real crit and dodge resistance we covered, it simply isn’t significant enough on its own to justify the slot over health pattern, or over a penetration pattern that actually diversifies what your flag brings to the fight.
