Wodryn Build Guide | Hero Wars Alliance
This Wodryn Build Guide covers how we’re developing the brand-new Nature Tank in Hero Wars Alliance, from his Skins and Artifacts to his Glyphs, Sparks of Power, and Talisman. Since he arrived with the Mighty Roots Season, we’ve been testing him a lot, and the more we explore his kit, the more interesting details we keep finding. So, now that we’ve covered his abilities in our first look, it’s time to take the next step and explain not only what to upgrade first, but also why.
Before we start, two quick notes. First, we’re leaving his Relics for a separate breakdown, because a hero can perform one way with his base abilities and completely differently once Relics enter the picture. Second, we’ve found some very interesting things about countering Wodryn; however, those deserve their own dedicated guide. For now, let’s focus purely on building him.
Wodryn Build Guide: Upgrade Priorities at a Glance
Here’s a quick summary of our recommended order for each part of his development. After that, we’ll walk through the reasoning behind every choice.
Wodryn’s Skins: Strength, Health, Then Armor Penetration
Wodryn has three skin attributes to consider: Strength, Health, and Armor Penetration. We expect the Health and Armor Penetration skins to become available through the upcoming Season Pass and events during the Mighty Roots Season.
1. Strength Skin
Our first priority is simple. Because Strength is Wodryn’s main attribute, investing in it improves his overall development by raising his Physical Attack, Health, and Armor. For a Tank whose abilities scale with Physical Attack, that’s a fantastic foundation.
2. Health Skin
Next comes Health. Although his kit offers some impressive defensive mechanics, he still needs to stay alive long enough to use them. The longer he survives, the more chances he gets to cleanse his allies, generate Oak Bark, boost Critical Hit Chance, and protect his team. That’s exactly why Health earns second place.
3. Armor Penetration Skin
Armor Penetration is an interesting option, since Wodryn isn’t just a defensive Tank. His Ultimate, Crown of Wrath, deals Physical Damage, and Armor Penetration helps that damage push through enemy Armor. In other words, this skin supports his offensive potential. Still, we consider Strength and Health more important when building a reliable frontline hero.
Wodryn’s Artifacts and Upgrade Order
His weapon, Rootbreaker, grants Magic Defense to the entire team for nine seconds when its effect activates. Meanwhile, his book, Grimoire of Thorns, provides Critical Hit Chance and Magic Defense, and his third Artifact, the Ring of Strength, boosts his main attribute.
1. Ring of Strength
For us, the answer starts with the Ring. Strength supports his overall development and raises his Physical Attack, which is particularly valuable because several of his abilities scale with that stat.
2. Grimoire of Thorns
Once that foundation is in place, the Grimoire comes next, and this is where things get especially interesting. For Wodryn, Critical Hit Chance isn’t just an offensive stat. Remember his fourth skill, Unbowed Oak? The chance of its damage reduction activating depends on each hero’s own Critical Hit Chance. As a result, raising Wodryn’s Crit Chance directly supports a key part of his defensive mechanics, while the extra Magic Defense adds another layer of protection. That’s a combination we really like.
3. Rootbreaker
Don’t misunderstand us here: teamwide Magic Defense is absolutely useful. However, based on our testing and current build priorities, we’re placing the weapon third. We’ll explain the full reasoning behind this choice in our upcoming Wodryn counters guide.
Wodryn’s Glyph Priorities
1. Strength
Once again, Strength takes first place. We’re building around his main attribute, which improves his overall stats and also supports the Physical Attack scaling on his abilities.
2. Health
Survivability remains extremely important. A Tank who stays alive can keep supporting his team, whereas one who falls too early never gets the chance to make full use of those impressive mechanics.
3. Physical Attack
At this point, we move from establishing durability to strengthening his performance in battle. Physical Attack boosts the scaling of his offensive ability, his healing, and the Critical Hit Chance bonuses from Deepwood Might. So this isn’t simply a damage investment; it also improves important parts of his support kit.
4. Critical Hit Chance
This glyph works beautifully with his mechanics, especially his own damage potential and the defensive interaction with Unbowed Oak.
5. Magic Defense
Again, we’re not saying Magic Defense is useless. Instead, we’re prioritizing the attributes we believe bring the most value to his overall kit, and we’ll return to this discussion when we cover his counters.
Sparks of Power
There’s no complicated strategy here. Our recommendation is straightforward: max them out as your resources allow. Every extra improvement contributes to his development, and naturally, we want him performing as strongly as possible.
Wodryn’s Talisman of Two Forms
His Talisman of Two Forms offers Strength as its main attribute and Toughness as its secondary stat. As we’ve already discussed, Strength is an excellent fit for him. Toughness, on the other hand, also deserves some attention, because it improves his durability once his Health drops below 50%.
For a frontline Tank who’s constantly exposed to enemy attacks, that extra protection can be valuable, especially while Wodryn is still new and players are learning how to get the best out of him. Overall, we see this as a sensible defensive Talisman for his current stage of development.
Looking further ahead, we wouldn’t be surprised if a future second Talisman took a more offensive direction. That’s only a possibility, though, not something we can confirm. For now, we’re focusing on what’s actually available.
Give Wodryn Time to Be Understood
This is something we really want to emphasize. Wodryn is a new hero, so he needs time to develop and, more importantly, time to be understood. It’s easy to see a new Tank with impressive skills and immediately start making comparisons. Yet figuring out when those abilities activate, how they interact with different allies, and what happens against different opponents takes proper testing, and that’s exactly what we’ve been doing.
Personally, we believe he has the potential to become an excellent Tank. His mix of cleansing, Critical Hit Chance support, Energy generation, and damage reduction gives him a genuinely interesting identity. Even so, we’re not going to rush into calling him the best at anything before we’ve explored the full picture.
What’s Next in Our Wodryn Series
Our journey with this hero is far from over. Next up are our Wodryn team recommendations, covering the partners who get the most out of his abilities plus some useful tips from our testing. After that comes the counters guide, where we have some very interesting findings to share. We’ll also explore his Relics separately, since they could change how we approach certain parts of his performance. Finally, once everything is covered, we’ll bring it all together in our Ultimate Wodryn Guide, giving you one complete reference for building, using, and understanding him.
Final Thoughts on This Wodryn Build Guide
In short, this Wodryn Build Guide comes down to Strength first, Health for survivability, and Critical Hit Chance wherever it feeds into Unbowed Oak. That approach gives him a sturdy base while still unlocking the clever links between his offense and defense.
