Markus Rework Explained | Hero Wars Alliance

This Markus Rework Explained guide breaks down everything that changed for one of Hero Wars Alliance’s oldest Heroes. After years outside the competitive spotlight, Markus has finally received a full rework, and it goes far beyond a simple number bump. In fact, he has switched from a Healer to a Strength-based Tank, with every skill adapted to fit that new role.

Below, we compare his old abilities with the new ones skill by skill. More importantly, we look at what these changes actually mean once the battle starts, so you can decide whether he deserves a spot in your lineup.

Markus Rework Explained: From Healer to Strength Tank

The headline change is his role. Markus is now a Strength-based Tank rather than a Healer. As a result, his third Artifact is now the Ring of Strength, and nearly every skill scales from Physical Attack instead of Magic Attack.

Here’s a quick overview of how each ability has changed before we dig into the details.

Skill (New / Old Name) Before the Rework After the Rework
Divine Protection
(Holy Shield)
Heals the lowest-Health ally and grants 5s of damage protection; scales with Magic Attack Same 5s damage immunity and heal on the most injured ally; now scales with Physical Attack
Retribution Ray
(Righteous Light)
Wave of light forward and backward; damage and healing scale with Magic Attack Same directional wave; damage scales with Physical Attack, heals 20% of each ally’s max Health
Compassion Heals the ally with the lowest Health Physical Damage to the nearest enemies in front of him plus a 2s stun
Ascension Untargetable spirit for 42s after death, still using skills Spirit absorbs 50% of allies’ damage until a Health-based cap is reached; no Energy gain

Divine Protection (Formerly Holy Shield)

The original Holy Shield healed the ally with the lowest Health and protected them from damage for five seconds. Divine Protection keeps that core idea intact, granting complete damage immunity for five seconds while restoring Health. However, the healing now scales with Physical Attack, which lines up with his new Strength build.

There’s an important distinction here, though. This ability doesn’t cover the entire team; instead, it targets only the most injured ally. That makes it an emergency tool, ideal for saving a fragile damage dealer or support Hero at a critical moment.

Also keep in mind that damage immunity isn’t the same as control immunity. Since the skill specifically blocks damage, we shouldn’t assume it also prevents stuns or other negative effects.

Retribution Ray (Formerly Righteous Light)

Righteous Light sent a wave forward and backward, damaging enemies and healing allies, with both effects tied to Magic Attack. Retribution Ray keeps that same two-directional coverage, but its damage now scales with Physical Attack.

The real upgrade, however, is the healing. Markus now restores Health equal to 20% of each affected ally’s maximum Health, and that value is calculated individually. In other words, a teammate with a bigger Health pool gets a bigger heal than one with a smaller pool.

So he isn’t just a Tank guarding one injured ally. He also provides sustain to teammates standing both in front of and behind him, although positioning will decide which allies actually benefit.

Markus Rework Explained - Hero Wars Alliance Markus as a Strength Tank

Compassion: From Healing to Crowd Control

This is one of the biggest changes in the whole rework. Previously, Compassion was another heal aimed at the lowest-Health ally, but that mechanic has been replaced entirely.

Now, Markus deals Physical Damage to the nearest enemies in front of him and stuns them for two seconds. Because the damage scales with Physical Attack, it fits neatly into his new build.

Why does this matter so much? He’s no longer limited to absorbing hits and restoring Health; he can now interfere directly with enemy actions. A two-second stun stops affected enemies from attacking or using abilities, which can buy your team time to recover or launch its own burst.

That said, the skill only hits nearby enemies in front of him, so don’t mistake it for a battlefield-wide stun. One more detail worth noting: the original announcement listed three seconds, but the final in-game skill confirms two.

Ascension: A Spirit That Shields the Team

The old Ascension turned Markus into an untargetable spirit for forty-two seconds after death, during which he kept using his skills. The new version keeps the spirit form but changes both how long it lasts and what it contributes.

After death, he continues using his skills but no longer gains Energy. In exchange, his spirit absorbs 50% of the damage taken by his allies. For example, if a teammate is about to take a big hit, the spirit soaks half of it, reducing what that ally actually suffers. Meanwhile, enemies can’t simply focus him down, because the spirit can’t be targeted by attacks or skills.

There is a crucial limit, however. The spirit has a maximum absorption capacity that scales with his Health, and once that total is reached, the spirit disappears. As a result, Ascension is no longer tied to a fixed forty-two-second timer; its duration depends on how fast the enemy burns through that capacity.

Against sustained heavy damage, the spirit could vanish quickly, whereas lighter pressure lets it stay up longer. This also ties directly into his Tank build, since stacking Health raises how much damage the spirit can absorb. Still, remember this is damage absorption rather than full team immunity, so allies keep taking damage and the protection has a ceiling.

What the Markus Rework Means in Battle

Looking at the full kit, Markus finally has a clear identity. He can give a critically injured ally five seconds of damage immunity, heal teammates based on their own maximum Health, stun nearby enemies, and keep reducing incoming damage even after he dies.

That’s exactly what makes this rework exciting. Rather than just inflating his healing numbers, the developers gave him several distinct ways to protect his team, from burst protection to crowd control to post-death mitigation.

Is Markus Ready for the Competitive Meta?

Of course, impressive mechanics don’t automatically guarantee a meta spot. We still need to see how reliably these abilities trigger in real battles, how well he survives on the frontline, and which teammates benefit most from his protection.

Overall, though, our Markus Rework Explained breakdown points to a promising result: an older Hero with a renewed identity, meaningful defensive tools, and a genuinely unusual ability after death.
