The Best Guus Defenses

The Best Guus Defenses in Hero Wars Alliance aren’t built around one fixed lineup, and that is exactly what makes him so exciting right now. Instead of locking Guus into a single team, we spent our time testing different defensive structures, different mechanics and completely different styles of play to see where he fits.

From those tests, three defensive teams really caught our attention. However, these are far from the only teams where Guus works. In fact, one of the biggest conclusions from our testing was the exact opposite: Guus is incredibly flexible.

Although his Legendary Relics obviously make him even more interesting, especially that Level 30 effect, you don’t need Legendary Relics to use these teams. Instead, this guide focuses on the teams themselves, why their mechanics make sense together, and what we actually saw during testing.

Why Guus Fits Almost Any Defense

Before we get into the teams, it helps to understand what Guus actually brings. His healing and Golden Feather mechanics give any lineup an extra survival layer, so the Heroes around him stay alive long enough to do their jobs.

On top of that, his Level 30 Legendary effect means allies affected by Golden Feather take 75 percent less Magic Critical Damage and Pure Critical Damage. That is an enormous defensive tool in the current environment. Still, it is an additional layer rather than the entire reason these teams exist.

Team 1: Folio, Crow, Miu, Julius and Guus

This team is annoying, and we mean that in the best possible way for a defensive team. Once you look at the mechanics together, it quickly becomes clear why.

Julius and Crow: Cleansing Meets Debuff Prevention

Julius already gives us a defensive foundation through his Shields. Moreover, once Julius has his Level 20 Legendary effect, every time he or an ally gains a Shield, negative effects are removed from that Hero.

Now put Crow into the same structure. Crow constantly plays around Silence, since his Silent Judgment can apply Silence to the entire enemy team. At Level 20, Holy Grenade damages Silenced enemies and the enemies around them while also extending Silence by another two seconds.

If we go all the way to Crow’s Level 30, Confinement becomes ridiculous defensively. While at least one enemy is Silenced, enemies cannot apply Debuffs or Curses, and that effect stays available as long as Crow is alive.

In other words, Julius helps remove negative effects from our side through Shields, while Crow prevents the enemy from applying new Debuffs and Curses during his Silence windows.

Miu Adds a Second Layer of Control

Then we add Miu, who brings a completely different form of control: Blindness. Every ten seconds, her Blinding Stormcloud targets the nearest enemy that isn’t already Blinded and blinds them for six seconds. Furthermore, her Legendary upgrades can make Blindness affect the entire battlefield and eventually increase the duration of all Blindness effects by another three seconds.

As a result, the enemy isn’t dealing with one defensive mechanic. Instead, they’re facing Shields, cleansing, Silence, Debuff and Curse prevention, Blindness, healing and Golden Feathers all at once.

Guus Holds the Machine Together

That last piece is Guus. His healing and Golden Feathers give this team another survival layer, and with his Level 30 Legendary effect, the protection against Magic and Pure Critical Damage makes it even crazier. Ultimately, the idea behind this defense is simple: make it extremely difficult for the enemy team to execute what it wants to do.

Team 2: Yasmine, Dante, Byrna, Octavia and Guus

Now let’s completely change direction. This one is fascinating because, rather than simply absorbing everything the opponent throws at us, we’re using Dodge as part of the engine.

Octavia and Dante: Turning Dodge Into Pressure

Dante and Octavia already make a lot of sense together. Octavia gives Dodge to her furthest-forward ally, with a stronger bonus for Eternity Heroes, and her allies even have a chance to Dodge Magic Damage. In addition, every time an ally dodges damage, Octavia can give that Hero an Armor Penetration bonus.

There’s another important interaction too. Whenever allies Dodge damage, Octavia gains extra Energy.

The Best Guus Defenses in Hero Wars Alliance

Meanwhile, Dante benefits massively from what’s happening around him. His Shifting Focus changes depending on enemy positioning, giving him either more Dodge or more Physical Attack, while his control can knock enemies back. So this defense isn’t just avoiding damage; the Dodge mechanics actively help the team generate offensive pressure.

Byrna, Yasmine and the Survival Loop

Yasmine provides a serious killing threat, whereas Byrna gives us a completely different survival engine. Byrna can restore Energy, heal and, once upgraded, remove negative effects through Bear Cuddle. Perhaps most importantly, her overhealing can increase an ally’s Maximum Health.

Now picture Guus sitting inside that structure. Dodge reduces the number of successful hits the enemy lands, while Byrna heals and boosts survivability. At the same time, Octavia turns Dodge into additional benefits and Dante exploits that environment. On top of all that, Yasmine is still threatening kills, and Guus keeps the team alive through healing and Golden Feathers.

This was probably one of our favorite discoveries, because it doesn’t feel like five Heroes thrown together. Instead, there’s an actual loop happening, where defense creates opportunities for offense. And if Guus reaches Level 30, Golden Feather adds that massive protection against Magic and Pure Critical Damage. Considering what Critical Pure Damage can currently do in certain compositions, that protection can be extremely important.

Team 3: Miu, Folio, Phobos, Tempus and Guus

We wanted at least one of the best Guus defenses to demonstrate something very clearly. Guus doesn’t need Julius, Octavia or Byrna to shine. In fact, you can completely change the Heroes around him and still create a very interesting defensive structure.

Control and Disruption First

This third team leans much more heavily into control and disruption. Miu interferes with the enemy through Blindness, while Phobos and Tempus contribute their own control and disruption. Folio does his job inside that structure, and then Guus provides the sustain that allows those mechanics to keep cycling.

Why Sustain Is So Underrated

This is something people often underestimate when evaluating a defensive Hero. Guus doesn’t necessarily need to be the Hero winning the battle himself. Sometimes, his value is simply making sure the other four Heroes remain alive long enough to become a nightmare.

For example, each extra second Miu survives means another chance for Blindness, and the same goes for your control Heroes, who get more opportunities to disrupt an enemy skill. Likewise, every additional healing cycle can shift when somebody dies, when somebody uses an Ultimate and, ultimately, who controls the battle.

The Best Guus Defenses Compared

Here’s a quick side-by-side look at how each team approaches defense differently.

Team Heroes Core Idea
Team 1 Folio, Crow, Miu, Julius, Guus Layers of protection and control: Shield cleansing, Silence, Debuff and Curse prevention, Blindness
Team 2 Yasmine, Dante, Byrna, Octavia, Guus Dodge-based engine that turns defense into offense, with Yasmine as the kill threat
Team 3 Miu, Folio, Phobos, Tempus, Guus Control and disruption kept cycling by Guus’s sustain

Three very different defenses, yet the same Guus sits at the center of each. That’s why we don’t want you to look at these teams and think they’re the only three Guus teams. That would completely miss what our testing showed us, since they’re really three examples of what Guus can do.

What Does This Team Need, and Can Guus Provide It?

For us, that’s the biggest takeaway. Guus is becoming one of those Heroes where we don’t immediately ask, “What is the Guus team?” Instead, we ask what a team needs and whether Guus can provide it. Right now, in a surprising number of cases, the answer appears to be yes.

Of course, none of these teams is unbeatable. There’s no such thing as an unbeatable defense in Hero Wars Alliance, and different attackers, development levels, Relic levels and matchups can completely change a result.

That said, if you already have Guus developed, experimenting with him tends to pay off far more than locking him permanently into one composition. And if you have his Level 30 Legendary Relic, the possibilities become even more interesting, because that 75 percent reduction to Magic and Pure Critical Damage while Golden Feather is active can completely change certain matchups.

Final Thoughts

We’re going to keep testing Guus, because we honestly don’t think we’ve reached the end of what this Hero can do defensively. These are the best Guus defenses we’ve found so far, but with a Hero this flexible, three teams are probably only the beginning.

So which of these three teams would you use on defense? More importantly, if you’ve already found another Guus combination that’s giving attackers serious problems, come and share it with us.
